BiblioCommons Announces Extension of Digital Resource Integration with BiblioCloudRecords Service
Extending its integration of digital resources into library catalogs and continuous investment in record enrichment, BiblioCommons today announced its intent to provide automated eContent catalog records to libraries through its new BiblioCloudRecords service. The service will eliminate the need for libraries to upload and manage eContent MARC records in their integrated library system (ILS). The BiblioCloud Records module will launch with OverDrive titles and be available in fall of 2016.
“In 2012, BiblioCommons was the first discovery layer to integrate OverDrive borrowing and account management into library catalogs, and then in 2013 we launched beta releases of enriched, automated eContent records that appeared directly in the patron catalog without requiring records in the ILS,” explained Beth Jefferson, BiblioCommons Co-Founder. “We’re delighted to be able to extend this integration in a way that benefits both libraries and their communities with more timely, accurate access to eContent titles directly from the online catalog and a more efficient use of staff time.”
BiblioCloudRecords will use digital vendor APIs to synchronize bib records for new titles as soon as the library has purchased them. The service saves libraries time and money by automating the process of adding records and metadata to the patron catalog without actually adding the records to the ILS. Where MARC records for new titles already exist, the BiblioCloudRecords service will remove duplicate records for the same title automatically, removing the need for manual suppression of any eContent titles already added to the ILS in the past. The service will also automatically remove records from the patron catalog when eBooks expire – a significant advantage over the current process that requires library staff to manually remove or suppress records when access to certain eContent titles concludes.
Patrons will benefit through immediate access to new titles the library has acquired without having to leave the catalog and log in elsewhere. Patrons can already manage their eContent holds and checkouts from within their accounts in the BiblioCommons catalog, and this functionality will continue to be supported with eContent discovered via BiblioCloudRecords as well. In addition to BiblioCloudRecords, BiblioCommons continues to work toward FRBR-based (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) search results display, which will also open up additional opportunities for integration and ease of use across formats.
BiblioCloudRecords will be an optional module for libraries using the BiblioCore catalog. Libraries that want to continue with the basic API-based integrated for OverDrive, 3M Cloud and Axis 360 with MARC records added to the ILS, will be able to do so at no additional charge.
